Chapter 18 by Matt Wall
“I just want the record to show that I think this is a bad idea.”
“Noted, Detective Granger.” Chief Tim Dean said. “But get on with it.”
“I’ll do it, but you need you to not be in there.”
Tim nodded. “I’ll be in my office.”
Granger walked back into the interrogation room and sat across from a bruised and beaten, Brody Mills. She sat with her back straight and her hands folded in front of her. “Brody Mills, I am charging you with the assault on Ciri Jackson.”
“Are you serious?” Brody said in disbelief. “Fine. Do what you have to do, but I would like to be taking to the hospital. Then, I would like my phone call.”
“That’s all doable.”
“One more thing,” Brody said.
“What is it?” Melanie waited, fearing what would come out of his mouth next.
“Can you release Allie? She didn’t know what she was doing. She thought she was helping.”
She bit her lip to keep her from speaking without thinking it through, then said, “Yeah. I’ll release her as soon as we are done here.”
“Thank you.”
“So, are those all of your demands? You do realize that you are being arrested and you are not in a position to ask for anything, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Brody chuckled. “I know you’re a good cop. You’ll do the right thing. If I have to sit in here while you do it, I have no problem with that. But, I do urge you to look at Van. He’s the one who did this to Ciri. I know your boss won’t look at his son, but, you’re a good cop. You’ll try to do the right thing.”
Melanie stared him in the eyes. She didn’t know what to make of it. It was her job to check out every lead, but she knew if she even looked in Van’s direction, Chief Dean would put a stop to it. She pressed the intercom button and said, “Andy, I need you to prepare the prisoner, Brody Mills, for transport to Winston General.”
